Three porta potties from On Call Services & Rentals

Cleaning a Porta Potty

Just about everybody has used a porta potty at some point in their life. From stinky, out-dated toilets at youth soccer tournaments to high-end luxury restroom trailers at weddings – there’s no shortage of reasons why someone would need a temporary, portable restroom.

But who empties these toilets and where does the waste go? What does the process look like?

How Does a Porta Potty Work?

All portable restrooms include a toilet, and many modern units also include a urinal for the men. However, in a typical porta potty, these are only gravity fed and don’t actually have any plumbing or running water.

Portable toilets work by storing waste in a holding tank along with special chemicals and enzymes that work to break down the waste and combat any unpleasant odors.

How are Porta Potties Cleaned?

Lucky for you, if you’re simply renting a portable restroom, you won’t have to worry about cleaning it. Your porta john provider should handle the routine maintenance and cleaning and will dispose of your waste in a timely manner without your involvement.

As Mike Row said best, “it’s a dirty job, but someone has to do it.”

But how exactly does the process work?

First, our sanitation team will connect a vacuum directly to the holding tank and suction the waste into a tanker truck. That waste is then delivered to a nearby municipal treatment plant where it is processed alongside traditional city sewage.

A high-pressure spray hose will then be used inside the restroom to clear out bugs, dirt, and any unmentionable contaminants that have accumulated inside the stall.

A sanitizing solution will then be sprayed over the entire porta potty from top to bottom to ensure there are no lingering bacteria.

After being cleaned and sanitized, we’ll either pick up your porta potty if you’re done with it, or restock it with toilet paper, hand sanitizer, holding tank chemicals, etc.
