How Many Porta Potties Per Person?
When you’re planning a large event or long-term construction project, the last thing you want is a line for an overused porta potty. You need enough portable toilets to prevent lines from forming, as well enough to prevent them from filling up too quickly.
How Many Porta Potties Do I Need for my Wedding?
Most on-site service providers recommend one portable restroom for every 100 guests, with a time limit of four hours. If your event is longer than four hours, you’ll need a second restroom per 100 people.
Some service providers will even recommend one toilet per 50 guests, if you want to ensure a quality experience with no wait times.
However, if you plan on serving alcohol, you can expect overactive bladders. Alcohol accelerates the amount of urinating a person needs to do.
Women also pee more than men, and take longer to go to the restroom. So if your event will have more women than men, plan accordingly.
If you really want to be prepared, we recommend booking a VIP restroom trailer with multiple air-conditioned units for both men and women, as well as sinks.
How Many Porta Potties Do I Need for a Construction Site?
OSHA, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, REQUIRES at least one toilet for sites with 20 or fewer employees.
OSHA also requires one toilet and one urinal for every 40 workers if your work force is between 20 and 200 workers. If you have over 200 workers, you’re required to have a toilet and a urinal for every 50 workers.
Of course, there’s no reason you can’t have more porta potties than explicitly required. Happy employees are more productive, and time they spend waiting in line is time they could be working.
The American National Standards Institute recommends at least one unit for every ten workers.
The Rule of Thumb
At minimum, you need at least two porta potties for every 100 people at an event, for every four hours of the event. Add for alcohol, add for extra time, add for convenience. There are some things you just don’t want to skimp on, and portable restrooms are one of them.
