Hazardous Waste Label Requirements

Hazardous waste is generated at a staggering 13 tons per second worldwide.

Proper hazardous waste disposal, especially of liquids, is a vital component of keeping us healthy and the environment safe. Hazardous waste label requirements exist to make the transportation, storage, and disposal of hazardous waste safer.

If a business fails to have the proper labels on hazardous waste, it can face stiff fines and penalties. These regulations have been instituted to help control the unauthorized disposal of hazardous waste.

Hazardous Waste Labels

When hazardous waste is prepared for removal, the container it is in has to be labeled. This rule applies to all kinds of hazardous waste, liquid and solid. If you’re in a waste-generating business or plan to be, such as manufacturing or other industrial applications, you need to know this information.

Label

The very first hazardous waste label requirements to address is the hazardous waste label. All hazardous waste must be marked with the words “Hazardous Waste.” This must be placed in an obvious, easy-to-read location on the container which is holding the hazardous waste.

Name and Address

The name and address of the company that produced the waste must be on the label. This allows for quick identification of who is responsible for the waste. If your business name is on a container of hazardous waste, you will be held responsible for any negligence or malpractice.

Date

The date of when the hazardous waste was stored needs to be applied to the label. This is an important piece of information because some hazardous waste can change over time. Whether this makes it more or less dangerous, or the container less viable, the date is important.

Properties

There must be a small statement included in the labeling that defines what the waste is and what properties it has. This can be something about the toxicity or reactivity of it, as well as the name of the byproduct or predominant chemical. Check your local and state laws for more information on this as well.

In some jurisdictions, you’ll need to include the state of the waste. This could mean condensed, solidified, liquid, etc. This information helps to protect people who may have to move the container at a later date.

Federal, Local, and State

It is important to remember when looking into hazardous waste label requirements that there is more than one regulatory body at work. There is the EPA, your local requirements, state requirements, and other federal requirements in play. Make sure you know how to be in full compliance to avoid a costly penalty or fine.
